Car industry is so inefficient

Why does one company do body design, engine design, transmission design,
suspension design, manufacturing, distribution, and supply chain
management?
For example, why can't there be a company that just makes passenger car
engines just like Cummins does for diesel engines?
Why can't there be one company that specializes in churning out platforms,
kind of like Intel churning out a new chip every few months?
Why does everybody have to do their own manufacturing?
It just seems that the entire industry is so inefficient. By specializing
and outsourcing, I bet car prices could be cut in half or more, easily.
And, the product would be better.
I know that for enthusiasts, the end product may not have soul, but most
people are happy with their Toyotas.
Cheers,
Jae
