Those who advocate PC like integration forget a couple of things.
First, integration is not as easy as any overclocking geek :-) would make you think it is. The powers that be that designed the mainboard I'm typing on never envisioned it would need to run Windows Server 2003. So, no drivers for audio. Support is iffy. Getting a whole working system properly is not as easy as it seems...
Second, the above model is possible only because of very strict standards controlled by a few companies. If there was no ATX standard, mainboard form factors would be random. Likewise, computer cases. Standardization leads to performance stagnation because we all have to stick to the standards...
Third, it would lead to commoditization, which is baaad news for prices AND support.
Fourth, and by far the most difficult to solve, is interoperability. PC makers go to serious cost and effort to verify their stuff is 'compatible'. Not likely to happen in the auto world.
You're beginning to see some of it under the hood, but as long as companies don't do it within the company, don't expect to be done globally. I recall a figure that GM had 30-odd different radiator caps at one point. Worry about getting down to a handful THEN about the global picture...
