Thanks for the advice so far!
I posted the questions on the 9-3 board, too, but, in response to a few of these questions, I had a tune-up done of the car (which these mechanics I just took it to said was poorly done) almost immediately after I bought it, which was about two weeks ago. The car, however, began to run WORSE after the tune-up until I wound up with it not starting that one morning.
I also had new tires, a left CV boot, and new struts put on (which is what the pre-purchase said was all I needed). The battery and the alternator were also recently checked and are in good working order.
As for severity, I'm not entirely sure, b/c although I know the mechanics I took it to have a reliable reputation, I've gotten such radically different opinions on the vehicle. The mechanics I most recently took it to had a first response of "dump it" (as opposed to the "fine" and "excellent" condition I got before) but then told me--after I asked--that they could maybe get me the distance I needed to go with the repairs with the $1000 of repairs. Their initial "dump it" response is what makes me slightly nervous about just going for it and driving it to my friend, as I figured they probably wouldn't say that if they were just trying to get some cash.
Besides it not starting once (and sometimes taking a while to turn over), it running rough(er) lately (incorrect spark plugs?) and the shifting being a little funky sometimes, however, I haven't noticed any obvious problems. Then again, I'm no expert. . .
