admittedly, I don't know much (or care much) about the American vehicles, but most Ponitacs sold are a good deal cheaper than Buicks, no? So it doesn't matter if they outsell Buick 2:1 - if you barely make anything on each car you sell, you have to sell way too many to recoup on R+D.
A year or 2 ago I rented a G5 and put about 500 miles on it. You know what, it's not *that* bad a car for what it sells for new. Compared to our Saab it feels cheap (and I wouldn't want to be in it in a collision), but that's because it costs a tiny fraction of the price of a Saab! Compared to its Japanese competitors, it actually had some low end torque, decent gearing (for a 4 speed auto), + got decent enough mpg.
But in the end, if you park a G5 next to a Cobalt, you realize that it is exactly the same car (slightly different lights, gauges, badge, etc)... so why bother? I guess lights + badges + gauges matter to some people, but you can hardly argue that one might buy a G5 to be different!
I recently saw a thing comparing car sales as # cars sold per brand for this past year vs 10 years ago vs 20 years ago. 20 years ago, #1 and #2 were Chevy + Pontiac. Today they are in around 4th (possibly combined) and far behind Honda + Toyota...
