If done right, there's really nothing wrong with badge-engineering. Several other manufacturers do it, it's just that they are able to hide it better.
I was looking at the full-line Pontiac brochure a while ago (after looking at the very nice G8) and it's no wonder the brand is dead. Outside of the G8, you can find any other Pontiac model at any other GM dealer in the form of another model. And here's the kicker - the Pontiac versions are usually less "performance oriented" than their clone. For example the Cobalt SS is sportier than the G5. Hasn't Pontiac always supposed to have been the performance division of GM?
How is it that the performance division has a minivan? What is the Vibe doing as a Pontiac instead of a Chevy? If you want to put an SUV in the Pontiac lineup why wasn't the Trailblazer SS used instead of the smaller 6-cylinder SUV? If done right, niche brands work. GM just doesn't understand this.
