I hate hot water tanks. I don't know much about efficiency for this kind of stuff, but I like the idea of tankless. My grandma's house has a tank, I'm sure it's huge. They built the house with all commercial-grade (and size) A/C, furnace, water heater. I always feel like we're going to run out of hot water there if people are taking consecutive showers/baths (large jacuzzi tub to fill), etc... It has happened. Also, the idea of having a giant tank of hot water in the basement constantly using energy to stay hot gets to me. Are they really more efficient than a tankless system?
My grandfather put a Bosch tankless propane heater at the summer house and it's great! I have no idea what it cost but it hangs on the wall in the closet upstairs and is capable of supplying hot water to two places ( for example the kitchen sink or dishwasher AND a shower). It's virtually silent while it's running too. Based on the little I know, if I ever build a house (probably won't) that's what I would put in it.
Have you looked at "Point-of-Use" systems? This is probably the most economical for the long run but could get $$$ if you have lots of "points of use."
Oh and I couldn't resist sharing how we get the propane to our "remote vacation cabin." There's no road access. :)
