I bought one and installed it myself about three years ago. As such I had very little upfront costs except for some plumbing materials and the actual unit, totaling about $900. The model I got can heat 6.3 GPM and I have never had a problem even with two showers at the same time, although there is some minor pressure loss. This is a rare scenario. I have yet to have any problems and I'm very satisfied. Note that my ROI is faster as I live in Philadelphia, which has very high natural gas rates.
Some facts and fallacies from my experience:
- Savings of about 25% a month (documented) on my water heating bill.
- Hot water DOES NOT take longer to get to the point of use. The water is heated practically instantly so it takes the same time as with a tank style water heater.
- Savings result in the heater being used less than a tank heater that heats water when you're not using it. If you have a family of 5 or more, especially teenagers, you may want to pursue other options.
- The gas line hookup is typically larger, 3/4" vs. 1/2", but they run far less often (ideally) and thus use less gas in the long run.
- Service life of a tankless unit should be about 20 years, with little or no maintenance. No changing of heater elements, anode rods or flushing of the tank.

Again, the decision to go tankless involves many factors.
1. How many people are in the household?
2. How high are you NG rates? Remember, that NG rates will continue to rise indefinitely as it's not a renewable source.
3. Do you have the correct size gas service?
4. Do you have the ability to directly vent to the exterior and not a chimney.
5. Can you save money by installing it yourself? Many plumbers balk at these as they're unfamiliar with them. My plumber was so impressed that he now recommends them when previously he didn't want to install them.

Fortunately for me it made sense and I'm saving money and natural resources.

Good luck,

Sean
