About a month ago our 18 year old 80 gallon commercial water heater went out. (It also ran the heating system.) It was going to be $5-6,000 to replace it so we decided to go with a standard water heater and replace the heating system this fall. I seriously looked at tankless, but decided with the high initial cost ($1800 installed for tankless vs. $500 installed for tank)it would take too long to recoup the difference. My main concern was going from a water heater in which it was impossible to run out of hot water to a "normal" one. I went with a 50 gallon and so far it's been fine. Even with two kids taking separate showers at the same time it manages to keep up.

One thing to keep in mind when researching tankless -- some manufactures' energy savings claims are based on going from electric to tankless. For example the Rinnai I was looking at claimed a 40% savings, but that was compared to an electric 40 gallon. Compared to a standard gas 40 gallon tank it was only 20%, or about $50 a year. I agree with the other posters that tankless units have their place, but I wouldn't go with one based solely on expected energy savings. Just my 2 cents. Now time to decide on a new heating system...
