how to clean the innards of a ratchet? Posted by bobc [Email] (#473) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bobc) on Mon, 27 Jul 2009 18:19:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Some background: I discovered a leak in the water supply line to my house. After much digging I found the leak. The supply line is 100psi rolled PVC (Ive never seen this before) but the plumbing supply dude assured me that a brass barbbed fitting and stainless steep hose clamp would do the trick.
and it did.
to tighten the pipe clamp down I used my trusty 1/4 inch ratchet and appropriate socket.
Now here is where it gets tricky: I live near Raleigh NC. We dont have "soil" really ... we have red clay. And this clay gets into everything. and stays there.
all of my tools were coated in red clay. Shovels, pipe cutter, propane torch, etc ... sprayed them down with the hose and with a little scrubbing they are all as good as new.
except for my ratchet.
I clearly have clay in the innards of the ratchet. It oozes out as I "ratchet it". And that can't be good. So what do I do?
Is it a bad idea to use water to
clean this? will I wash out the lubrication in there? will it rust? I assume I can disassemble the thing (I mean it was put together so it must come apart). but I don't see any obvious way to take it apart (no cir-clips or snap rings for instance).
can I rinse it with water and squirt WD 40 into it? Im not worried about the clay on the outside, Im worried about the clay on the inside of the ratchet mechanism.
I hate to throw it out. We (this ratchet and I) have been working on saabs together for nearly 25 years now!
