It is true that there are a few cases of Viggen engine failure, but you said he doesn't know SAABs specifically. It sounds like his theory is based on the notion that a peformance version of any given car will be driven harder than a non-performance model, thus if bought used will me more likely to have been ridden hard and put away wet. This may well be true with something like a Honda Civic Si or something, but I don't think it's true with a SAAB. If anything, I think the opposite; the buyers of new Viggens, which sold between $30,000 and $40,000 new (depending on how much discount you got), were enthusiasts who took care of thei cars, and were past their teenage years. It is true that there have been cases of premium performance models having issues, such as the 2001-05 BMW M3, but the 330i had similar issues, just less frequently.
