The Viggen (or Aero) version of the Saab engine is not just some hot rod thing where they do a few things to make it more powerful. It really is engineered to handle the extra power. Look at the B234 engine in the 9K line. Base model to Aero is the same engine, but it's built to be the Aero engine, with oil sprayers for the pistons, etc. I don't know about the Viggen motor, but I'm pretty sure it's designed/built to take the pressure of some hard use.
Sure, if an engine is driven hard all the time it will wear out faster, but if driven hard it should also receive a higher level of maintenance, so it can even out somewhat. And if you just drive normally or spirited it's perfectly fine. To me, driving hard is lots of redline shifts, hitting full boost much of the time, lots of heavy braking. Hard to do a lot of that on the street these days. Just driving fast is not driving hard, unless one is doing 100 mph+ on the autobahn on a regular basis.
You pal doesn't know anything about Saabs, so I wouldn't listen to him very closely. What he says might be true about ricer cars when kids put turbos on normally aspirated engines, but it's not the case for Saabs.
