I live in NH where they were about $25 last time I checked. I got 2 free ones when I first signed up (shoulda got three). But there's no monthly fee and it's automatically replenished via credit card when it goes below $10, and never to more than $30. In NH, at least, you can set these amounts based on your usage.
It continues to amaze me how people are willing to wait in toll lines when you can breeze through the EZ Pass lane.
As I understand it, the transponder can be "linked" to multiple vehicles, but I think you're supposed to own the vehicles. Although how the system can tell this I have no idea. Our transponders work interchangeably on 3 of our Saabs (have to add the 4th one). If you go through in a vehicle that isn't linked to the transponder you can be fined, but I'm not really sure how it works. The cameras do take pictures of the vehicle and plate numbers, but I don't know how intelligent the system is.
I suppose you could put a transponder in a UHaul truck and use it, then see what happens. It really shouldn't matter--it's still a 2-axle vehicle which is what toll rates are usually based on. But I wouldn't be surprised if you went through the EZ Pass lane in the truck and were then pulled over for evading the toll. Better check ahead of time.
