I think most people still associate Saabs with 'safety,' just like Volvos. Most people associate Japanese brands with 'reliability' and 'economy.' From a purchase standpoint, it just depends on what your priorities are. As such, a new Honda Accord can get away with having a 3-star rear side impact crash test rating and no one cares. Not even Consumer Reports, the alleged impartial industry 'watchdog.' You'd never see me put my family in a Corolla or a Civic because every one I've ever seen in an accident looks like it's exploded. I'll take the 'quirkiness' of a Saab over that any day.
From my personal experience with 'Japanese' cars, I have a '04 Mazda6 wagon with 90K on the clock that has been flawless. Minor warranty issues only, even though it burns 1.5 qts of oil between 5K changes (people say it's 'normal'). Great car. Made in Flat Rock by UAW labor with huge US / Canada content. Safety? Pretty good overall but I wish it had stability contriol. Either way, I'd buy Mazda again if they came out with another Mazda6 wagon.
My '01 Saab with 160K has been somewhat problematic in the past two years but that's to be expected with the miles as any car between 120-160K will have stuff that simply wears out. My '06 Saab with 28K has been flawless with just a minor annoyance that I need to get cared for under warranty -- occasionally the fuel gauge doesn't show full after a tank-up. I'd buy another Saab anytime but it would have to be low-mileage used because I don't want to eat the initial depreciation, etc.
