Toyota has acknowledged the lack of "soul" in their recent products - both Toyota Japan and Toyota America have both come out and said they're interested in improving the sportiness of the cars, and in fact the Toyota American prez recently announced he's committed to a new sports car. And, Toyota and Suburu are producing a joint front-engine RWD sports car ... although it may or may not make it to America. I'm sure most of us remember when Toyota had the Supra, the MR2, AND the RWD Corolla in their lineup instead of eight SUVs.
That said, IMHO they're on the wrong track. The US governments (collectively) are doing everything in their power to appliance-ize cars - insane mileage standards, safety standards, etc. Not that I specifically oppose making cars more friendly to people and the environment, but these types of laws take most of the creativity out of the process. You can't make anymore Sunbeam Tigers ('cause you'll die) and you can't make anymore Pontiac GTOs (because they'll never meet CAFE) so the only thing left is making cars that are quieter and feature more "infotainment" gear.
Cars like the current Corolla ARE the future, IMHO, so we might as well get used to it. And start hording all the 20+ year old cars that still had souls. :)
