I'm self-employed and have a business website, a FaceBook page, am on Linked In and Plaxo (similar). Have also diddled with Twitter but don't see much value there. OTOH, a friend of mine is the CMO at Kodak and uses Twitter constantly to great effect for him, and somewhat less for Kodak. Kodak has even published a little book on ways to get business benefits out of social networking. I can get a copy to you if you email me.
FaceBook isn't bad, and adds a social aspect to the biz people you deal with. I have one and it's kinda fun, and biz colleagues DO visit and comment. It's not meant to be a biz generator, just promote top of mind awareness. It let's you know biz associates on a different level, which can be useful. You and I are about the same age and plenty of FaceBook people are 50-something nowadays, so it's not really just a college kid thing anymore.
You and I do different things, but one of the best things I've done this year is start my own newsletter that is primarily aimed at biz gen and it has absolutely worked. I can see you doing one that is about motorcycle trips, but it would be easier to do a blog on the topic, photos and all, then direct people to it. Another friend has one on cars, modifying them, and track days which is a lot of fun to read. And it brings him business for some tuning work he does on the side.
This social media stuff does work. It takes some time and effort, but I've found it worthwhile. I'm a marcomm guy and it's just a new piece of the marketing mix.
