My take on this as a VP of Sales & Marketing Posted by Saabpilot [Email] (#134) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Saabpilot) on Tue, 29 Sep 2009 18:48:33 In Reply to: Social-Business networking....., Mike Lynch [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 29 Sep 2009 10:23:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Twitter is only going to work if you, or one of your employees is in front of a computer ALL of the time. My company can't afford that, or rather I won't afford that. We sell products, systems and service to businesses 98% of time, with very, very little to individual consumers. Twitter is not right for us. I've attended marketing seminars on Twitter and for what we do, it is useless. For other types of business it might make sense. There are also alot of bogus Twitter "followings" going on right now. Be aware of that. Whether they are some kind of bot or virus or something, I'm not sure.
Our policy is that I require everyone in my sales department to have a profile on LinkedIn and link with as many business contacts as possible because LinkedIn is a strictly business networking site.
Facebook we do not use because many of us (including me) use it for personal things such as reconnecting with old friends, family, hobbies & interests of a non-professional nature. Many companies create a Facebook presence to talk to their customers. But I'm of the opinion that most of those are direct to consumer products or services, not business to business like us. If we ever do that, we will not make Facebook "friends" with our personal Facebook profiles.
For your business which IS selling to individual consumers, it might make more sense to have a Facebook profile for the business.
My two cents worth....
