please read the previous thread about this car before saying "any reasonable person knows to shut off the motor..."
This car has a START/stop button that you press. You must, as has been widely reported, press the START/stop (and it's labled that way, LARGE START and small stop) button at least three seconds, and some reports say five, to shut the engine off. Not something I'd want to have to do in traffic at speed under duress after figuring out the throttle is stuck and the brakes are not slowing the car (as was reported by external witnesses)... Not sure if there is a more traditional key off option besides that button or not.
There is still a question about whether the computer controlled system will allow shifting from drive to another gear (a lower gear, neutral, etc) at speed. Does the computer protect the engine and/or transmission? Other cars do have some sort of protection for the transmission that won't allow you to do dumb things. We are still waiting for someone to prove or disprove the notion that this transmission would not allow itself to be shifted into neutral while at speed and while the engine was at fuel throttle. As a software guy I could see someone making that mistake, or not. Some cars used to allow re-engagement of crusie control at the speed previously set from a dead stop. That's an eyeopener! Saab detuned the engine in the 9000 to protect the autobox on the Aeros. Newer cars do really cool computer controlled stuff like cut the throttle for a split second on upshifts when you have the pedal down hard, protects the transmission and makes it shift really smooth. Anything is possible.
