Pretty scary! Stories of folks stepping on the brake and the car takes off, and there is no brake effect. Also apparently the brakes grabbing on one side while accel on the other, causing the car to do a 180 in traffic.
I was checking because an older neighbor had the car take off on her when she stepped on the brake parking the car. Not only had the car taken off, but it was still digging a hole in the grass after she hit a building and stepped out of the car. She felt it was not her problem, but gave up driving after the second incident in two weeks. She also had a significant hesitation when pulling out into traffic. This on a car with ~ 20k mi.
There were about two dozen accel issues on the NHTSA website for the 2004 ES 330 only. From this amateur's viewpoint, it sure looks like computer/drive by wire issues. I've got to think there were other models and years similarly affected. Maybe through 2010? The mat issue seems a bit fishy to me.
