lots of good suggestions... I'm surprised that so many people have had good experiences with tile. I'm mildly regretting doing bathroom vanity top in it, but it's good to hear others have had good results. Low cost + easy for sure.
I thought I'd throw on a photo of Richlite from their website, as it is not well known. It's main competitor is Paperstone, very similar. We did an exhaustive look for countertop materials when we did ours: formica, granite, corian, silestone, soapstone, concrete, terrazo, tile, butcherblock, and others... Richlite won out for overall cost, quality, + aesthetics given that I could fabricate + install it (vs granite). Fantastic stuff.
Since we did ours, there are a range of new countertop materials, many from the "eco" side of things, but interesting stuff to google: ShetkaSTONE, vetrazzo, fireslate... I can't verify the quality of any of it, but looks interesting...
James...
