My house came with light maple butcher block cabinet tops, which apparently had no maintenance done by the previous owner. Yes it's possible to resand most of the cuts and scuff marks out, but it is not easy to get dark imbedded mold out of the areas that are constantly wet around the sink. The replacement kitchen is topped in a synthetic granite, not cheap.
