Why I don't support a GM boycott Posted by Caarma [Email] (#592) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Caarma) on Fri, 25 Dec 2009 22:15:58 In Reply to: Merry Christmas and Why I don't support a Saab boycott, Caarma [Profile/Gallery] , Fri, 25 Dec 2009 12:11:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
GM is a corporation and they do what they think is right to make money, not to cater to the preferences of a small group of fans of one of their brands. That being said, I do think the Saab brand was mismanaged, (although GM may have extended its life). They also mismanaged Saturn and Pontiac. There are many employees there, and I was one of the ones who tried to guide the executives' decisions on product portfolio decisions for the brands we worked on. I was also one of the people who asked back in 2004, 2005, "What if gas prices go up? Why aren't we working on more car platforms instead of SUV's and crossovers? Why don't we bring diesels over and other smaller engines from Europe (as well as Opels)?" But, employees typically make their stand, say what they think is right and then are often ignored. It's no different than at most other corporations.
So if you feel that all employees of GM should be punished for the decisions made by a few, then that's your right. I can understand that you're upset that your favorite brand will most likely fade off into the sunset.
As for GM not making products people want to buy or that their quality is bad, the fact that they have loyal customers and have sold more vehicles than any other in the U.S. means that those arguments are unfounded. Sure, there were a lot of fleet vehicle sales for a while, and some of the cars weren't that great. (If the vehicles were so troublesome, fleets wouldn't buy them either). But there have been many great GM products through the years. My family has owned many, and have hardly had any major problems (and no major engine issues except on a 1981 Buick). Remember that GM used to sell the most mid-sized cars of any manufacturer. They were just split between more models. And today, the quality gap between best and worst is so minute, that it's not that big of a deal.
GM is not a charity. I agree with that statement. But, (as long as you don't hold a grudge), they deserve fair consideration for their products. The new Buick Lacrosse is a nice vehicle that is selling well and the next Regal will be the Opel Insignia in Buick clothes. The direct injection 2.0 L turbo version may well be my next car and there is talk of offering a manual transmission on it. See it on Buick's website. My brother has a 4-cylinder 2009 Chevy Malibu and it honestly drives in a more refined manner than the 2008 Honda Accord 4-cylinder that I've also driven extensively. The Cadillac CTS, Buick Enclave have garnered great reviews and the new Chevy Cruze is supposed to get 40+ mpg on the highway with a 1.4 L turbo.
In the end, we all do what we want to do. I just wanted to share why I think a boycott doesn't make sense because sentiments seem to have snowballed in favor of a boycott without anybody really offering counterpoints.
By the way, I would also consider Fords, and I like the Fiesta, but I for some reason don't like Ford interiors, (Lincolns excepted). I also would consider Chryslers, but I can't see myself ever buying a Honda or a Toyota.
