A big chunk of the general public has this perception that Japanese cars (Yotas especially) are bullet-proof and that anything from GM or Ford is junk. While there is certainly history to back this up, I'm not sure it's really the case anymore. If well-maintained, domestics are pretty good, assuming one likes the ride, feel, performance, etc.
I think there is a bigger issue, though. From a manufacturer's point of view, it can be argued that it really doesn't pay to make cars that are especially durable: it slows down how frequently you can sell a given customer another car. If a car runs well to say, 100K, then starts to have issues, the first owner has moved on and doesn't care. He/she got a lot of use out of it. Almost any car these days can do 100K without a whole lot of drama.
But Saab owners seem to tend to keep their cars a long time. We do rack up the miles and point to our odometer readings as points of pride. (There are Subie, Mercedes, BMW, Yota, and Volvo guys who do this, too.) But that's not how most people operate--which is one reason leasing works so well.
And it raises the question... to what extent has the tendency of Saab owners to keep their rides a long time contributed to Saab's present situation?
