Over my last three prior SAABs, I have always changed dino oil every 4,000 miles on my 92 900s NA and the synthetic every 7,500 miles on my 9000 and 5,000 miles on my Viggen. Never had an engine that used oil with a cumulative total of 430,000 miles on those three cars.

So I'm telling my coworkers that I'm getting anxious that, due to time constraints, I have not changed my synthetic oil in my new to me 2006 9-5 after 8,000 miles (its getting done today)and these two 3 series owners said that their respective BMW's computerized oil change indicators currently have them at 20,000 and 33,000 miles without ordering a change. One gets an oil change only once a year. WTF? And I believe one car is a twin turbo. Even assuming its synthetic, isn't that beyond the reasonable life of the oil?

Has anyone ever heard of intervals that long, or are these guys fooling themselves? When we have to pay for the oil change they recommend every 3,000 miles, when it is free from the factory the interval is 10 times longer?
