Changed oil every 10k miles using whatever brand name non-synthetic was on sale at the time. My 1986 900 was finally sold with over 300k miles on it. No hint of engine trouble.
Same with my 1998 900 -- 10k oil change intervals. Sold at 160k miles. Engine was running better than new. Inaudible from inside the car. Used only ACEA A3 rated oil.
I don't drive my current BMWs (E46 325i and E91 328xiT) nearly enough to change when directed by the oil monitor. So I change once a year using proper BMW LL-01 rated oil.
I have done many oil analyses, always showing super low wear rates and plenty of TBN left.
Far more important than frequency of change is the quality of oil, your driving style/environment and other maintenance, such as frequent coolant changes, brake fluid changes, using top quality air filters and watching for air leaks, etc.
Also, according to oil analysis results that I have seen, BMW supplied motor oil really does last a long time, providing excellent TBN retention, stable viscosity characteristics and rock solid HTHS numbers.
