As with almost any older car, the most important thing with buying it will be how well it was maintained. A 200,000 mile car from Arizona that has been meticulously maintained will be a better bet than a 100,000 mile car that has spent it's whole life on the streets of a snow-belt city, and has absolutely no maintenance records. Turbo cars are definitely preferable, and with the small premium they gather today, I'd say try to find an SPG. 1993 Commemorative Edition models are mechanically the same as SPG's, but look more like regular turbos, and there were only a few hundred of them, fewer than 400 I think. Those were available as both 5-speed and automatic. Another thought, if you want the ultimate Classic 900 is the 1994 Turbo Convertible. I don't know what age kids you have, but I'm guessing they're aged between 0 and 20... If you have middle school or high school age kids, and haul them and their sports kit/instruments/etc around, you may want to consider a late 9000, say 1996-1998. These were VERY good cars, they hold a ton of stuff, have 4 doors, turbo performance, great seats, and are quite a bit more modern and hence easier to live with than a Classic 900, yet still retain many classic SAAB virtues and feelings. Same rules (condition, maintenance history, etc) apply. I'm not saying it's a newer better Classic 900, because the only thing that is a newer better Classic 900 is the early 1990's classic 900's, but it is an alternative worth considering. Having a good mechanic is priceless with any car, especially with an older SAAB, and there are many who can be found by asking on this board, depending on where you are. If you're in Boston Metrowest, I can recommend a couple of great ones.
