I have said for a while now that we (50 year olds and younger ) will have a very difficult time in our later years. Our youth was easy. Our parents suffered and sacrificed in the first part of their lives, then things got easier for them (generally speaking).
History will prove (if humans are around to analyze it) that the 401K was the worst thing for the working class, it has really removed any thoughts of retirement. I remember sitting in introductory meetings with the investemnt companies years ago and they would talk about 10% returns every year! No one dared talk of market downturns or how we were expected to pay for our own health care. Many of our parents continue to have very attractive health insurance plans payed mostly by the companies where they worked (God bless them they deserve it). The future don't look so good for anyone. BTW, I'm also a math/science guy who was layed off last January...they sent my entire lab to Korea
