How/Where to bail if it all goes down

I know this is way off topic but there's a lot of smart people on this board and I'm not shy about tapping that brain trust. According to the Secretary of the Treasury under Bush, if the government hadn't bailed out the banks, we were days away from a total global bank melt down. And the news isn't getting any better. Yes there's some bright spots but there's also a lot of other really scarey stuff (like whole countries going belley up). The truth be told I don't know if there's anyone who can fix this. A million bucks in the bank (or several)would have been the answer to most of the down turns in the last 50 years but even that wouldn't work if all the banks go down--I don't think the FDIC could handle it. So what's the answer? keeping money in a mattress? a cabin in the woods with lots of guns and freeze dried food? buying a sail boat heading to the south pacific, a revolver to the temple? I know most of us are pretty entrenched in the current statis quo so it's sort of a theoretical question of what we would do if we could. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's given some thought to surviving a potential sh*t storm (as depressing as it might be) and I'd be very interested in hearing other people's ideas
