Residing in the dark side of my mind are at least half a dozen scenarios for the next 50 or so years, few of them positive. Our best hope, at least in the U.S. is that...
1. the populace wakes up and votes for substantial top to bottom change and will make the sacrifices needed to make it happen;
2. we create new industries based on the technologies that will help us be energy independent and bring in new jobs of many types;
3. we take a big picture view of the future (with other nations) that helps sustain the entire planet. We really are all in this together.
There's lots more, but those are kinda top of mind. What to do? Minimize debt. Know how to fix things, have some skills that are marketable. Short of major war or huge environmental/natural disasters, we aren't going back to the dark ages or even the 18th century. But we could wind up working and living very differently.
I think the global economy, as bad as some aspects of it may be, may actually help because it breeds interdependency. But things will not be like we have been accustomed to in the U.S. We can't be the huge consumer economy we've been. We have to make do with less, not have the latest gee-whiz gadgets, the biggest TVs and the fanciest cars. Moderation will be the answer. For many deeper thoughts on this check out the Long Now Foundation (longnow.org)
Whatever we do, it won't be cheap, painless or easy. And I tremble for my kids (16 and 21). But it can be done. Still, my fear is war and environmental issues could well be the catalysts of widespread social disruption.
Still, if it's over, it's over. Modern humans left Africa 50,000-60,000 years ago. Screwed up a lot of stuff. Did some fine things, too. Sooner or later the beasts and bugs and weeds will get it all back.
