there may be a limit to the dollars in innovative products vs more normal products, at least from a GDP perspective. So while innovation helps, other differentiators are important as well, eg quality.
A good example is displays. For years, the Japanese were tops in displays. They'd release a 14" LCD, and 6 months to a year later, Koreans were making a competitor, so the Japanese answered by making a 15". Now we have massive 50" LCD televisions made by the Koreans + they are every bit as good as the Japanese... so where do the Japanese go from there? and it's a lot more costly to be the innovator! A focus on quality is one answer. Moving to higher end products (eg Linn approach, keeping manufacturing in Scotland)... but high cost products tend to be a small market segment... but there is still some merit to it, eg "German engineering"...
the extent of modern day outsourcing has spread the wealth overseas (+ in the short term, greatly improved the wealth of the executive top few %, + in the short term greatly cheaper consumable items for the rest of us). The world is more competitive now + we need to get used to it. Our standard of living has been artificially inflated over the past 20 years or so + with more competition, that is going to change... innovation is still key to compete + not fall behind...
