I wish I were that good at Photoshop. Then I could poke, prod, twist and alter the lines of a 2011 9-5, call myself a "designer", and get published in an online blog too!
This design doesn't even remotely resemble a Vintage Saab. Looks more like an Audi TT (the new one with the roof) with Saab ends glommed onto it.
Think about the two really successful "retro" cars: The Volkswagen Beetle, and the Mini. In both cases, there is a very strong interpretation of the original cars from the 50s and 60s, but also a very strong, "modern" look to them. But in neither case, did they simply slap on the nose and tail treatments of their siblings. The Beetle didn't get a modern Jetta nose, and could you imagine if the Mini got a BMW 3-series nose?
And let's not forget about some of the other retro cars. The Mustang, the Camaro, and even the Charger (though the Charger doesn't quite work for me, as the proportions are all wrong). Again, they worked with the idea of building a 2010 version of a 1969 car, and didn't just slam stuff together.
Personally, I'm not so sure there's a market in the USA for a "retro" Saab of any type, but if there was one, it would have to be the Classic 900 hatchback shape, to my mind. With the C900, Saab became a more well-known brand, and started to lose the "quirky" reputation, left over from the days of two-strokes and freewheels. It wasn't quite there yet with the 99, though a case could be made for the 99 turbo.
Whatever happens, it's not going to be for five years at least. Saab needs to get the 2011 9-5 launched and selling, and needs to get the new 9-3 launched soon, and yes, even the SRX, er, 9-4X.
Lots of work to be done before wasting time and money on "halo" cars...
