they were essentially political devices for shoving money into the pockets of the political class. Overpaying the conduits (unions) to funnel to the political class in prosperous times, and used as conduits to funnel money looted from the public (taxes) to the political class themselves (via the unions) during difficult economic times. Why does the political class have that kind of power? They harness the power of envy and mutual hatred among the ruled sheeples who are not able to respect the personal choices of others.
