Good bye old friend...
I had a 1994 Dodge Dakota 4x4 x-tra cab I bought new. When I bought it, I was disappointed that I couldn't get a rubber floor and vinyl seats as I knew I'd just be using it for a working vehicle--hauling lumber, dump runs, gravel & mulch loads, pulling stumps. For it's time it was a very comfortable truck. I fitted it with a Leer cap and we took it on vacations to Canada, Myrtle Beach, Maine and the Cape. My son also drove the crap out of it a couple years ago when he got his license--through rivers, mudding, parties in the woods, teen-with-a-new-license crap. When gas prices went through the roof, my wife made me take it off the road for the first time since owning it--230k miles. Since it was off the road, I couldn't capitalize on the cash-for-clunkers deal--damn. I tried to put it on the road again this Spring but it wouldn't pass inspection--rusty brake and fuel lines. Sitting in the yard unused for over a year really took a toll on it--rust everywhere. I sold it to a friend of mine on Saturday for $100 to use as a farm truck. I really wish I could replace it with a basic work truck that had all the grunt of a top-of-the-line luxury truck and none of the overly-complicated computer-controlled accessories. A truck really only needs an ECU to make the engine run right. I should be able to fix everything else on the truck with simple hand tools. That just isn't being made here anymore. I'd hate to think what would happen to a modern truck if my son drove it through the river.
When it was new:
