Okay, so don't sell me on a Saab. If I could afford a 9-3 sport combi XWD I would buy one... But since I can't...
My wife's isuzu rodeo is at 115k on the clock. It runs about as well as it ever did, which is to say it never has much of a problem, but is a gas hog, terrible on the interstate, truck like, cheap interior, the engine isn't smooth, I could go on...
So before it becomes a total money pit and a pain in MY behind, I've decided to replace it. She needs AWD or 4wd as we have a short but steep driveway here in Vermont. Yes, I could probably get out most days with FWD, but she isn't as aggressive in the snow, and I'm not driving home 30 miles from work to pull her up a 25 foot hill, so AWD it is.
We would love a midsize suv or crossover, or a wagon. We're looking to spend 10-13k, get something under 70k miles, and I'm probably going to buy it in Atlanta so I can get a salt free car to start with (I'm heading there in a couple weeks)
Now for my car bias. My mechanic doesn't have much good to say about Subaru despite the thousands of them here in VT, and from the friends I have who own them I'd have to agree (lots of brake jobs, wheel bearings, and suspension work). I feel like a Volvo XC has the potential to be a money pit (a friend dropped $600 to fix a power window COMPUTER). I love Toyota quality. I'm not sold on Honda, but I'm pretty sure they are also a good buy. I don't know much about Nissan, but the Murano has a great look and is less expensive then then toy or Honda and gets better mileage.
My wife doesn't care much. She wants something for the soon to be family, the dog, and to get to work (5 miles each way). I want something we can take on a trip in the winter (my saab is up for the winter).
The choices so far:
Toyota Rav4 - probably 4 cyl
Toyota Higlander - would seem underpowered with a 4, but better fuel mpg
Lexus RX300 -
Nissan Murano?
Honda Pilot? CRV?
???
Because her commute is <10 miles round trip It's a bit silly for me to be really nit picky on fuel economy, but I would like something we can drive year round on trips, and for that I'd love to be getting good MPGs (RAV4 seems to be the winner here at about 24-26). I like a comfortable ride, enjoy a moonroof, and I'm a sucker for luxury (winner - Lexus, but bad mpg at about 18).
All that said - what to you guys think? Our garage has a 9-5 Aero with 107k (only driven in the summer) and a 1998 Dodge Ram with a Cummins and 186k.
Sorry for the long post... Any recommendations are welcome. Low cost of ownership and something that can run 250-300K would be great. We love no car payments.
Thanks in advance - sorry for the long post.
