It will immensely enhance the resale value of existing 9-5's. Considering the small number of fully-loaded '10 Aero XWD that are planned to be shipped here, it should hold special appeal to those who want the latest distinct toy and keep them for only a year or two before moving onto something different.
The OG 9-5 used to be a 5-series sized car sold at 3-series price (before severe discounting late in the extraordinarily long model cycle). The new 9-5 seems to be almost a 7-series sized car (not the LWB) priced to be a shade below 5-series. It's good marketing strategy. The volume seller in the next few years will be 9-3 and 9-4X, with the new 9-5 playing the role of the flagship.
IMHO, Saab losing money during GM administration was largely the result of accounting shifting R&D cost to Trollhatten in order to avoid Swedish high tax rates. It's defies imagination how the old generation 9-5 and 9-3 could possibly lose money by themselves on a per unit basis as the platforms were already paid for in the mainstream GM cars designed to sell at much lower prices.
