The old 2.3 was, more or less, the same 2.3 turbo motor we saw in the 9000's. It's a fantastic motor, but from what I understand, the new 2.0 will be direct injected to increase the efficiency of the combustion and maximize horsepower. I also have a feeling that peak boost is significantly less than that of the old 2.3 (which, if I remember correctly, could top 19-20psi). Likely, they're trying to make the car feel a bit more responsive and reduce boost lag to appeal to a wider audience...so, while you and I may prefer the old B234/5 and it's awesome rush of power, the new 2.0 will likely appeal more to the masses, and improve average fuel mileage.
