You're right.
One thing I have to remember is that people have different driving experiences. I sit in stop-and-go traffic a couple of times every year, on my way to or from places I like to visit. If I sat in traffic daily, I would have a much different thought on how engines pair with my driving. I didn't live in a town with a stop light until I moved away for college (1998). Keeping a car revved up (when I want to have the power) is somewhat invigorating, rather than a nuisance.
When I get out of my (just recently sold) 9K Aero (5spd) and sit down in my dad's M3, it takes a bit of adjusting how I drive to keep the revs up when I know I want the power. But, I get used to it, and I enjoy it.
I'm currently living in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and am without a car (something I know I will miss more and more). One of the things I am looking forward to the most when I visit "home" is driving.
Oh, and here's a picture of what I call my "backyard" back in Clifornia:
