The different gearing actually makes the torqueless engines even less favorable: the requirement to keep high rev at highway speed, hence buzzy noise.
The point that I was trying to get at is in comparing cars that are relatively close in their torque curves, not dramatically different cars. To illustrate the point, the BMW 528i makes 230hp max at 6500rpm; suppose we take the identical engine but re-chip the engine and automatic transmission to disallow it rev above 5000rpm, we instantly have a 180hp "523i"! That's exactly what everyone who drives a 528i but never revs above 5000rpm is actually getting. How often does any of us routinely rev above 5000rpm?
The high-revving engines are not faster in real life because it takes time for the engine to wind up from fuel-saving engine speed on highway to horsepower peak, and even an excellent driver takes 3/4 to 1 full second to make each shift. That's why Saab's real life highway over-take speed from about 45mph to 80mph has a long track record of being especially impressive among peer luxo-sporty cars . . . and one of the reasons why other makers like BMW have moved to turbo in recent years for their high engined models in each market segment. The latest generation M3 with high-revving V8 has been doing very poorly in the market place because people realized that in real life driving the 335i and 335is' higher torque output is much more useable. Rumor has it that the next generation M3 is moving to turbo as well.
