Went to my dealer's reception last night, and drove the 9-5. Experience better than I would have guessed based on what I've read. Car was tight, solid, quiet.
Acceleration was slower from a stop than I would prefer, and I found the steering a bit over-boosted. Ride a bit stiff, even set on comfort. As others have noticed, control is best left on "intelligent," as the comfort and performance settings make little substantial difference. Handling and AWD good. Seats excellent. Car is somewhat bigger than I prefer.
Overall, I found the car's feel and performance pretty consistent with observations others have made, include the Boston Globe writer and some automotive journalists I respect.
If Saab can build in some of the tightness and refinement of the 9-5 into the next 9-3, and maintain the performance of my Aero, then I am a likely buyer. Not sure I'd ante up the $50k+ for the 9-5.
My dealer originally had four 9-5's, sold 'em all in a few days and had to go get some more for the reception. One sale was to a BMW 750 owner who likes the uniqueness and exclusivity of Saab.
The real question remains the long-term viability of Saab, and the competitiveness of current offerings. The Globe writer correctly raised the question, and in my view, the jury is still out. I am hoping, because I very much want to see Spyker and Saab succeed.
