imho, the outgoing 9-5 (sportcombi in particular) was the perfect size for our family. the new one is probably a little big, though I haven't seen one in the flesh yet. the current 9-3 is a little small for us inside, though I like that size driving-wise... so I think I agree with you, if the 9-3 grew a tad + the lineup grew a 9-1 or 9-2, that would be ok...
model differentiation is important, and that was pretty good in 2002 with 9-3 hatch, 9-5 sedan + wagon, but 2003+ has been poor in that sense with sedans + wagons in both 9-3 + 9-5 with only a moderate size difference (and styling, engines, etc) to distinguish them...
wrt sliding doors, I don't actually like them. I'm not convinced people who look at saabs + people looking at minivans have the same mindset, but perhaps some do... (this may be sacrilage to say and many will disagree, but) I also find that the 9-3 sportcombi has an aesthetic that has a bit of a minivan look to it at the back end... I know this is the trend with many modern hatches/wagons, but I don't like it. 9-5 back end is much cooler imho... anyway, adding sliding doors would not be a selling feature for me + I have kids in car seats... I would be much happier to see the window switches move back to the center console area where they belong, an the leather to increase in quality etc, than to gain a bunch of north american-centric features like sliding doors + more cupholders etc... all imho, of course + I also realize these things are not necessarily mutually exclusive...
James...
