General trend toward bigger cars (and bigger pillars!)

One of the greatest criticisms of the old 9-5 was that it was too small, and I think for 50k, even 40k, SAAB has to provide a 5-series/E-class alternative size-wise. Pillars are getting thicker for added accident protection, so this is something people are finding in all newer cars.
I prefer smaller cars too, though I find the current 9-3 a little too small for our needs, which I suspect a lot of families are finding, but I'd really like to see the next 9-3 grow just a little, and be big enough for families, with a smaller, "Golf/Rabbit sized" 9-1 slotted in below. This is a car I think SAAB has needed for 15 years. How do folks feel about sliding doors on a wagon? One of the things minivan owners like most about their vans are the sliding doors. Would SAAB dare to put sliding doors on the next 9-3 wagon? Now it can be done without the dorky sliders visible in the rear 3/4 panel. It could kill off 'vans once and for all, if a stylish European wagon offered the convenience of a mini van, with the style and driving experience of a premium European car.
