Kate, you're running a risk because most people sell older cars when they've already started to become money pits. European cars can be very expensive to repair and while Saab is not the worst, it will add up if you have to take it in for everything. As mentioned - go over to the 9-5 section and look at some of the posts and do a search on 'sludge". Not trying to scare you off, but there were some design issues on the 1999-2001, and even to some extent on the 2002-2003, that caused engines to sludge up and die if the oil wasn't changed frequently enough or the car was used for lots of short city trips (so beware the low-mileage creampuff unless it comes with lots of service receipts).
The sludge issue was resolved by 2004 so you would be much better off with a 2004 or later car, but that will be at least $6-7K if not more. In any case, ask to see the maintenance records (oil change every 5K with full or semi synthetic oil) and do not buy from a used car dealer as you will get even less for your money. I love the 9-5 - they are great road cars and very safe (have had two, still have one), but unless you find a really well maintained older one that some enthusiast has taken really good care of, you could lose all that money in short order. Good luck with it.
