This approach works for me too. If one budgets $1000-1500/y for repairs + maintenance + learns a bit about the car (to avoid problems / catch them early), a good used Saab works out pretty well... for someone who's hands off and just wants basic reliable transportation, well, maybe it might be a discouraging choice, but there's not much you can get new for $100-150/month car payment! Newer used might be cheaper maintenance wise for a while, but anything out of warranty used you should budget similar amounts for repairs... you won't get dinged every year, but occasionally there will be a doozy...
search the 9-5 board + do a pre-purchase inspection at a Saab indy if at all possible... good luck!
