I consider all the people that I may know through work, family aquaintences etc. Most think nothing of going out and buying or leasing a new car, to the tune of 25K and up, some go waaaayyy up! I picked up my 2000 Gary Fischer wagon a few months ago with 130k on the clock, a very fair market value and a great deal in my opinion, many new and expensive parts including a new/used engine due to sludge from previous owner. I installed the PCV upgrade and was told the pan/screen was clean when checked, ill keep my fingers crossed and do the maintenance as I should. That said, the exterior is nearly perfect with good paint and zero rust, the interior is in mint condition, every system switch, bulb and feature work nicely. Yes it is a 10yr old car and things will begin to need repair, but the way I see it, I have a virtual 20K or more of repair money because I didnt buy the new car and incur the interest on the payments either. Unless you buy something exotic new, you lose 25 percent of its value as soon as you drive it off the lot, so resale is a losing game, and trade in is another losing game financially speaking. You start the cycle all over again with big payments and interest. I have a good looking ride, with mint interior, rust and dent free exterior, safe, and a pleasure to drive. If it needs mechanical repairs, then so be it, I have a solid base to improve upon. Like others have said, try to find a clean one, which may or may not mean well maintained, but I would guess that if one cares for the car cosmetically then they would care for it mechanically in most cases. I wouldnt worry about the mileage as,if the engine has made it over 100k, then It's already passed the test of time.PCV upgrade and oil screen check for pre 2004 cars and peruse this board for other maintenance items, have a cash reserve and dont be crushed by the inevitable repair.
