The reasons I bought Saab and Volvo cars is because (1) they're safe; (2) they're pretty cool; and (3) they're not German (much too cliched - everyone else drives a BMW, why the heck should I be a lemming?)
The issue I have with Chinese made cars is that, in an effort to save a penny per part, they may cheapen up something significant with or without realizing its importance to safety. For example, about two years ago, an American tire importer based in NJ got burned because the Chinese manufacturer omitted an essential glue strip - even though it was in the American design - because the manufacturer didn't understand its importance and thought it could save some money by omitting it. The NJ importer is probably bankrupt now, and the Chinese manufacturer is immune from suit - good luck suing them - they are in the PRC.
The point of this is that, with an iPod, or a laptop, if the product turns out to be a POS, you can throw it in the garbage - no great loss other than a few hundred bucks. But if your children are smashed up in a car crash because a seat belt tensioner failed due to substandard materials, who really wants to risk that?
Cars are the one thing I'll gladly pay more for to have the peace of mind that my family will have the best chance of making it through a crash.
My belief, perhaps right or wrong, is that Western companies pay attention to things like that for ethical, moral, legal and financial reasons. Saving a penny here and there is not worth it when the stakes are large. Not sure those concerns are first and foremost to PRC manufacturers. They are beyond reach - and if you are damaged by their crap, you are pretty much on your own.
