I'm guessing the electroplating used on cars might be partly for surface/cosmetic reasons? Certainly galvanized exterior nails are often a little rough... I doubt it's insurmountable... fwiw, the audis/volvos I've seen with the peeling paint looked not unlike the typical galvanized sheet metal products you can buy... they need to work on those paint jobs!
I agree, life is about taking risk, but it's also about managing risks + taking the right risks. Sometimes the right risks for one person are not for another. I don't fault Steve for looking at Chinese made cars with skepticism. I largely agree with him. Steve + I may lose out on some well priced products... no big deal, imho...
Your 3 points are well put. I would only add, wrt the short end of the stick (while true), that in the long run (as some short term issues get corrected, eg the "effluent", and hell, we've dumped enough effluent in our own rivers! and still do!), the ever increasing level of technological capability we are exporting should pay dividends to China. Our dependence on cheap stuff + cost cutting is more likely than not to only hurt us (as you have effectively pointed out in previous economic threads).
Personally, I'm not a big fan of highly cost-sensitive product development, but I do recognize the reality of the demand for it in the market place... As a consumer, I like to err on the side of buying nice things, but fewer... though, that can be hard in the technology space (short of being a luddite, which to some extent I am)... btw, I don't say that with a high + mighty pov, it's just what I prefer... to each their own of course...
cheers,
James...
