have to be "married" to the car's computer, so you can't just get a used one from a boneyard --or even a new one-- and put it in yourself. You have to take it to the dealer or tech with the right computer.
As for door locks, most cars are down to one in the driver's door and maybe one for the trunk or hatch. I've never had a mechanical, keyed door lock fail in the past 40-odd years of car ownership. Had one freeze up a few times but easily remedied. But I've had power door lock actuators fail.
Justin, I don't fear technology, in fact I make my living in a highly technology-driven industry. But I do think a lot of the technology in cars is over-rated and over-priced for the value it provides, and the added complexity creates service problems down the road. Technology is great when it works, but as someone who values and prizes self-sufficiency I don't like having to rely on people proven to be unreliable (car dealers in this case) to fix stuff that is of limited value to me.
