we had this discussion a couple years ago, and you agreed that it was probably more sensible for my parents, living in a rural area, to go for a 9-5 vs 9-3 (and they love the 9-5 btw, it's been flawless), simply due to the decreased need for Tech2 capability to do simple things...
My concern is that going forward, uncommon brands (like Saab) will be hopeless to own in rural areas only set up to manage Ford, GM, + Honda... The mechanics in such areas can't justify the cost of the specialized equipment to work on other brands (even if they are highly skilled technicians with the knowledge to fix the cars). I think Saab would be wise to make electronics diagnostics more accessible such that a wider range of people can work on the cars. Security can be done in ways that aren't costly: why should it cost a fortune to hook up to Sweden? It doesn't cost much to validate other software (eg Micro$oft)...
If I owned a new Saab, I'd gladly pay $300 or so for a diagnostics solution (eg cables + software to use with my existing laptop)... it's the $3000 + annual subscription fee that is out of reach (to diy + rural techs alike)...
James...
