but the goverment did not go far enough. The goverment should have required the uniform sensor design for all the manufactures with complete part interchangeability and owner's ability to switch to different sensors. The aftermarket would have quickly lowered the price of the sensor to just a few dollars each.
My guess they cave in to the automanufacturer lobby and threw them a bone - so now they can charge $$$$ for their proprietary sensors and "programming services".
As for being necessary, TPMS saves fuel and tires. More fuel saved means lowers prices at the pump for everybody - according to the laws of supply and demand. Properly inflated tires improve safety as well.
