using cruise on hills

Every Monday night about 11:00, I drive 50 miles on an almost deserted, hilly, two lane where the speed limit is 65. If I set the cruise at 70, I get about 30.5 pretty consistently ('02 9-3 manual). But if I use the cruise to incrementally accelerate to 75 on the down hills and incrementally decelerate on up hills, I can turn 34-35 on the same stretch of road. I try to keep the turbo out of the yellow when I'm doing this.
Disclaimer: I don't advocate such erratic speeds when driving in traffic; this is my all-alone, middle-of-the-night, keep-myself-awake diversion.
