I wonder that the effective of mandating some sort of device like this would be on national fuel consumption? I drive differently when I leave up the real time fuel display on my 9k, and I certainly drive differently when I have a hybrid rental with all the glowing wizz-bang stuff showing my consumption. I'm not usually for more government regulations, but it seems like this would save a lot more fuel than those silly tire pressure monitors that are now required and at virtually no cost (since the computer has all this info anyway) and one can just ignore it if they chose.

Oh, and BMW has had those weird vacuum based economy gauges for years, and if BWM does it then it must be good, right? :)
